Post-operative nutrition is a key part of recovery and long-term care after bariatric surgery, including procedures such as gastric sleeve surgery. While surgery is an effective tool for weight loss and metabolic improvement, long-term outcomes are strongly influenced by dietary intake, nutrient adequacy, and ongoing support.
At MBSA, patients are guided through structured dietetic support throughout recovery, based on current
evidence-based bariatric nutrition guidelines.
Staged diet progression
After surgery, food intake is gradually reintroduced in stages:
- Fluids
- Puréed foods
- Soft foods
- Gradual return to regular textured foods
This staged approach supports healing, improves tolerance, and helps the digestive system adapt to reduced stomach capacity. Progression is individualised based on tolerance and clinical guidance.
Nutrition and supplementation
After bariatric surgery, reduced intake and changes in absorption can increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies.
Common nutrients of concern include protein, iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and calcium.
For this reason, long-term management focuses on:
- Adequate protein intake
- Lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation as required
- Regular monitoring for nutritional deficiencies
Protein intake is particularly important to support healing and preserve lean muscle mass.
Eating behaviours
Long-term outcomes are influenced by eating behaviours and adherence to dietary structure. Patients are supported to develop mindful eating, portion control, and structured meal patterns, which are associated with improved long-term weight maintenance.
