What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery refers to a group of procedures designed to support weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions by changing how the digestive system works. These procedures may reduce stomach size, alter how food is absorbed, and influence hormones related to hunger and metabolism.

Bariatric surgery is typically considered when other approaches such as diet, exercise, or medication have not led to sustainable results. It is not a standalone solution, but part of a structured, long-term program that includes medical care, nutritional support, and lifestyle changes.

Four Proven Paths to Lasting Weight Loss

Every procedure is tailored to your health and goals, using minimally invasive techniques

Gastric Sleeve icon

Gastric Sleeve

Removes a portion of the stomach to create a smaller, tube-shaped stomach — limiting intake and reducing hunger-related hormones. The most commonly performed bariatric procedure.

Gastric Bypass (RYGB) icon

Gastric Bypass (RYGB)

Creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes part of the small intestine — reducing intake and changing how calories are absorbed. Often considered for metabolic conditions.

Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB) icon

Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB)

A streamlined bypass with a single connection to the small intestine — combining restriction with a degree of malabsorption in selected patients.

Revision Surgery icon

Revision Surgery

For patients who have previously had weight loss surgery and need further intervention due to weight regain, limited results or complications.

Other Choices

While a number of weight loss procedures are available, our surgeons focus on treatments supported by strong long-term evidence for safety, durability and sustained weight loss. For this reason, we do not perform the procedures below. During your consultation, we’ll discuss the most appropriate treatment options based on your individual health, weight loss goals and medical history.

Gastric Band (Lap Band)

Once a common weight loss procedure, gastric band surgery has largely been replaced by newer techniques that generally provide more reliable long-term weight loss. Gastric bands often require ongoing adjustments and carry a higher likelihood of complications, band removal or revisional surgery over time.

A gastric balloon is a temporary, non-surgical treatment placed in the stomach for several months. While it can help with short-term weight loss, many people regain weight after the balloon is removed unless significant lifestyle changes are maintained. It is generally not considered a long-term solution for obesity.

Endoscopic gastric plication is a minimally invasive procedure performed without surgery. Although it may be suitable for selected patients, long-term data is still more limited than for established bariatric operations, and weight loss outcomes may be less durable. Our surgeons therefore focus on procedures with more extensive long-term evidence supporting their effectiveness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible for bariatric surgery?

Most patients qualify with a BMI of 35 or higher, or 30+ with weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea. Previous weight loss attempts and readiness for long-term lifestyle change are also considered. A free 15-minute eligibility call is the easiest way to find out.

There is no single “best” procedure. Gastric sleeve suits many patients, while bypass options may be preferred where reflux or metabolic conditions are significant. Your surgeon will recommend the safest, most effective option after a thorough assessment.

Costs vary with the procedure, hospital and your level of health insurance cover. Many patients are also eligible for early release of superannuation, and our team can prepare the supporting medical documentation. Visit our costs page or call us for a personalised estimate.

Most patients lose around 60–80% of their excess weight within 12–18 months, depending on the procedure chosen and how closely lifestyle recommendations are followed. Structured two-year follow-up helps you keep it off.

All procedures are performed laparoscopically (keyhole) by experienced surgeons in accredited private hospitals. As with any surgery there are risks, and these are discussed openly and honestly at your consultation.

Most patients stay in hospital one to two nights and return to light activities within one to two weeks. Your care team guides you through a staged post-op diet and a clear follow-up schedule from day one.
